MADRID, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Spanish police have confirmed that former Spanish international winger, Jose Antonio Reyes had been driving at over 200 kilometers an hour in the crash that killed him and his 23-year-old cousin on Saturday.
The 35-year-old former Sevilla, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid player, who won 21 caps for Spain had been returning to his hometown of Utrera in southern Spain after a training session with second division Extremadura when the accident happened shortly before midday on Saturday.
The Spanish Civil Guard on Tuesday confirmed that Reyes's high speed was the "main cause" of the fatal accident, which saw his car fly off the road before turning over and bursting into flames.
"The speed limit in the area is 120kph. We can confirm the high speed was the main cause of the accident."
"Our investigation remains open, we do not know if there are more causes of the accident. But right now we can confirm that the main cause was the speeding. The speed was more than 220kmph," (100 kmph over the speed limit) commented a Civil Guard spokesperson.
Thousands of people attended Reyes' funeral on Monday and his coffin was draped with a Sevilla flag, while messages of sympathy have poured in from former coaches and teammates.
