SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Two militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces on Friday in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out in village Braw Bandina of Pulwama district, about 30 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"This morning a gunfight triggered here between militants and joint contingents of police and army," a senior police official posted in Awantipora told Xinhua. "In the exchange of fire two militants were killed."

A police spokesman said the bodies have been recovered from the spot. "We are trying to ascertain their identity and group affiliation," the spokesman said.

Indian army and police have not suffered any damage in the gunfight.

According to police officials, the operation to track down militants in the area was launched on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of militants.

Authorities have suspended mobile Internet service in the district and adjoining areas in the wake of the gunfight.

On Wednesday, five paramilitary troops were killed in a militant attack near Anantnag district.

The last three weeks have seen a sudden increase in the number of gunfights in the region.
