MAPUTO, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The 44 years of independence of Mozambique was celebrated Tuesday at Mozambican Heroes Square in Maputo, where President Filipe Nyusi said the country is facing challenges as well as positive economic prospects.

The coming presidential, legislative and provincial assemblies' elections in October will "open another stage of multiparty governance," said Nyusi at the ceremony.

Nyusi reaffirmed the need for effective peace to boost the country's economy and development while denouncing the armed attacks in Cabo Delgado which "constitute a frontal attack on our sovereignty, our state and are against our people."

Nyusi said the results of the talks with the main opposition Renamo on Disarmament and Demobilization will be shared within a week with the contact group.

The president also mentioned the destruction and mourning caused by cyclones Idai and Kenneth while praising the efforts of all partners engaged in post-disaster reconstruction.

Speaking about the prospects of economy, Nyusi said the materialization of the liquefied natural gas project in the north opens up unique opportunities for fostering the growth and diversification of the economy, as well as the industrialization of the country.

"It is an opportunity to promote the expansion of our economy, job creation, income generation and poverty reduction," he said.
