World Heritage Committee convenes in Azerbaijan

BAKU, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The World Heritage Committee launched its 43rd session here on Sunday.

The 11-day event, attracting more than 2,500 delegates from 180 countries, will examine 36 nominations for inscription on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), according to the state-run news agency AZERTAC.

The inscriptions, scheduled to start on July 5, will include Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along the Coast of Yellow Sea-Bohai Gulf of China as a natural site and Liangzhu Archaeological Site in Hangzhou of China's Zhejiang province as a cultural site among other nominations.

The Committee will also examine the state of conservation of 166 sites on the World Heritage List, 54 of which are also on the List of World Heritage in Danger, according to UNESCO.

Azerbaijan's First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, chairperson of the UNESCO Executive Board Byong-hyun Lee and Azerbaijan's Minister of Culture Abulfas Garayev addressed the opening ceremony of the event.

Azerbaijan joined UNESCO in 1992 and signed a memorandum of cooperation with the organization in 1996. The nation's Walled City of Baku, Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower, and Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
