Death toll in Russia's Irkutsk flood rises to 21

MOSCOW, July 4 (Xinhua) -- At least 21 people have been killed and 14 remain missing in a flood in Irkutsk Region in Russia's Siberia, local media reported Thursday, citing a spokesperson for the regional division of the Emergencies Ministry.

According to the reports, 10,146 residential houses and 49 important facilities, including hospitals, schools and kindergartens, have been flooded since June 25. The emergencies service has evacuated 2,048 people, including 447 children.

The Irkutsk Regional Disaster Medicine Center said 2,080 people sought medical help as of Thursday and 313 of them were hospitalized.

The water level in the local Iya river rose by almost seven meters above the critical level, and a state of emergency has been declared in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the country's armed forces and other military formations to take part in the rescue operations.
