MAIMANA, Afghanistan, July 6 (Xinhua) -- The death toll of mortar attacks, allegedly fired by Taliban militants on residential areas in Khawja Sabzposh district of northern Faryab province on Friday, had risen to 14, provincial police spokesman Abdul Karim Yurash said Saturday.

"The number of those killed in the mortar attacks on residential areas in Khawja Sabzposh district has reached 14 as some more injured people succumbed to their injuries," Yurash told Xinhua.

Taliban militants, according to Yurash, fired several mortars on the residential areas and a bazaar on Friday, killing four civilians on the spot and injuring 36 others.

Similarly, Faryab provincial governor Naqibullah Faeq also blamed the Taliban for the attacks, saying the armed outfit conducted the deadly offensive on the civilian area to terrorize the locals.

However, Zabihullah Majahid, who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit, had denied the accusation in contact with the media.
