LONDON, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Veteran coach Steve Bruce looks certain to be named as Rafael Benitez's replacement at Newcastle United in the coming days after resigning from his current position at Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.

The 58-year-old had only been with the Championship club since January, leading them to a comfortable 12th place finish after they had struggled under previous coach Jos Luhukay.

On Saturday, Bruce admitted that Newcastle had approached Sheffield Wednesday to ask permission to talk to him.

"It's in the hands of the two clubs at the moment. There is nothing really to talk about until the two clubs reach some sort of a compromise."

"It has happened so quickly that I have to take stock of the situation, it's in the hands of both clubs and I will see where it develops over the next 24 to 48 hours," he said.

Bruce was born in Newcastle, although he counts their bitter rivals Sunderland among the clubs he has managed during a long career.

Other teams he has led are Hull City, whom he led to two promotions to the Premier League and to the FA Cup final, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town, Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic, although Newcastle fans may worry that although he has a track record of success in the Championship, his Premier League history is not especially impressive.
