Portuguese PM congratulates Ursula von der Leyen on election victory

LISBON, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa on Tuesday congratulated Ursula von der Leyen on her victory of election as the new President of the European Commission.

In his tweet, Costa expressed his hope that the German will realize the European Union's progressive strategic agenda which she has committed to for the next five years.

Ursula von der Leyen, 60, of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, was elected to be the next president of the European Commission by the European Parliament with 383 votes in favor, 327 against, 22 abstentions and one null vote.

The Portuguese prime minister said he is looking forward to working closely with the European Commission on the implementation of the EU progressive strategic agenda which the new president committed to for the next five years.

He said that the next step should be "the adoption of a multiannual budget that matches the ambitions of this new agenda in response to our citizens' expectations".

Ursula von der Leyen will succeed Jean-Claude Juncker, who has led the EU commission over the past five years, and will be the first woman to hold this position.
