LONDON, July 18 (Xinhua) -- British retail sales rose by 3.8 percent in June, compared with the same period of last year, according to figures released Thursday by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Data showed that the quantity bought in June rose by 3.8 percent year on year, with growth across all sectors except department stores, higher than a 2.2 percent year-on-year growth rate in May 2019.

In the three months to June 2019, the quantity bought rose by 0.7 percent, compared with the previous three months, with a slowdown from the 1.6 percent growth in the three months to May 2019.

On a monthly basis, the quantity bought increased by 1.0 percent in June, with non-food stores contributing the most.

Meanwhile, online retailing accounted for 18.9 percent of total retailing in June, lower than the 19.3 percent figure reported in May.

Rhian Murphy, head of retail sales at the ONS, said: "retail as a whole saw a return to growth in the month of June, mainly due to growth in non-food stores with increased sales in second hand goods, including charity shops and antiques."
