Death toll in India's floods reaches 119

NEW DELHI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The combined death toll in devastating floods in India's northeastern state of Assam and eastern state of Bihar has gone up to 119, official sources told Xinhua on Friday.

In Assam alone around 39 people have died, confirmed an official in Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

According to the official source, while 37 people have so far died due to floods, two died in landslides triggered by floods. Lives of around 5.3 million people have been affected across 28 districts of the state, added the official source.

Among the worst affected districts are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, and Kokrajhar.

As many as 689 relief camps have been set up across the 28 flood-affected districts.

Water level in river Brahmaputra flowing through the river continues to be above the danger mark.

Relief and rescue team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in the flood-affected areas for search and rescue operation.

In eastern state of Bihar, another severely affected by flash floods, the death toll has risen to around 80, confirmed an official while speaking to Xinhua over phone from state capital Patna on Friday.

"As per the latest details, around 80 people have so far died in Bihar floods. Besides, over half-a-million people have been affected in the state," he said.

Flash floods in Bihar were mainly caused by torrential rains in the catchment areas of Nepal. The most-affected districts in Bihar are Sitamarhi, Araria, Kishanganj, Madhubani, East Champaran, Sheohar, Supaul, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Saharsa, Katihar and Purnia.
