MARSABIT, Kenya, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Friday launched the Lake Turkana Wind Power project, Africa's largest wind farm, which has an installed capacity of 310 MW of clean electricity.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta said during the launch that the project, the single largest private-sector investment in Kenya, will boost the country's electricity capacity by nearly 20 percent.

Kenyatta said the government has stepped up efforts to encourage development of wind farms and other renewable green sources of electricity.

The wind farm, located in Loiyangalani, Marsabit County in northern Kenya, consists of 365 turbines with overhead electric grid collection system and a high voltage sub-station. The project is expected to achieve 68 percent load capacity factor.

According to Kenyatta, Kenya's installed power capacity has increased from 1,768 MW in March 2013 to 2,712 MW.
