TUNIS, July 22 (Xinhua) -- The Tunisian army intercepted on Monday a Libyan warplane in southeastern Tunisia, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The Libyan warplane was intercepted at 7:30 a.m. local time (0630 GMT), in an area about 8 km from Medenine Province, according to the ministry statement.

It is a type L39 warplane piloted by a colonel, it said.

In his first statements, the pilot said his aircraft experienced a sudden failure which forced him to make an emergency landing.

A preliminary investigation has been launched into the incident, the statement said.
