BUCHAREST, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Romania's main ruling Social Democratic Party on Tuesday named its national leader and incumbent prime minister Viorica Dancila as presidential candidate for the upcoming election in late autumn.

Dancila was nominated by the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) as presidential candidate, after she had earlier won the majority vote of the party's National Standing Bureau in this respect.

"This is a vote that honors me, and at the same time renders me responsible, because I know that I won't step into an easy battle, I know it will be very hard fight, I am aware that the party sets off from a difficult position from the electoral point of view," Dancila said.

"I believe I have chances...because I have always proven that I can also be the prime minister of all Romanians, therefore I can also be the president of all Romanians, I have shown that for me consensus is important, balance is important, solidarity is important, what I do for Romania and for the Romanians is important," she added.

Dancila stressed that the period in which "we divide the Romanians into my Romanians and the Romanians of other parties, in my government and the government of others" "must cease."

Dancila's presidential bid will be confirmed by the party's Congress on Aug. 3.
