TRIPOLI, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The air force of Libya's UN-backed government said it targeted an air base of the east-based army in Jufra district in central Libya early Friday.

The airstrike on the base destroyed an ammunition store and a military shipping aircraft, while another airstrike was carried out on positions of the rival army.

No further details were revealed about the two airstrikes.

A day earlier, the east-based army announced the downing of a drone belonging to the government forces in Jufra.

Linking the Libyan cities in the west, east and south, Jufra has been under the control of the east-based army since June 2017 when the area was cleared of militant groups.

The army, led by Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over the capital Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

The fighting so far has killed more than 1,000 people, injured over 5,700 others, and forced at least 120,000 to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization.

The army is allied with the east-based government, as the North African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
