KIEV, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Tuesday to search for prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) soldiers.

The MoU was signed at the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States between the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense and the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) under the U.S. Department of Defense.

According to a statement published on the embassy's official Facebook page, the ceremony was held with outgoing Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly and DPAA Director Kelly McKeague.

A result of two years of work, the MoU aims to "prepare the necessary regulatory framework that allows the search in Ukraine and the return to the United States of American soldiers who went missing during World War II," the statement said.

This is the third MoU signed on this issue between the Ukrainian executive authorities and the U.S. Department of Defense.

The memorandum enables a bilateral exchange of experience on the search of Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen who went missing or were captured during the ongoing conflict in east Ukraine, which started in April 2014.
