ATHENS, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale hit off Crete island in Greece's Aegean Sea on Monday, causing no injuries or extensive material damage, authorities said.

Greek seismologists revised downwards an earlier preliminary estimate by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center, which said the quake was magnitude 5.

The tremor's epicenter was located in the sea area some 70 km north of Crete at a depth of 36 km.
