RIGA, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Food safety inspectors have busted an illegal poultry meat distribution business in Riga Central Market, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to a statement released by the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service, a firm that was only licensed to store meat products, had also been involving in an unauthorized processing and distribution of meat of unknown origin at the market.
The Food and Veterinary Service discovered the illegal operation during an inspection at Riga Central Market. The inspectors found that the firm was processing poultry meat in inappropriate conditions, without ensuring the necessary temperature, equipment and running water.
The products were not properly labeled and had no documents proving their origin.
Around a ton of poultry meat was seized from the firm operating the illegal business, the food authority said, adding that the firm now faces administrative sanctions.
