WUHAN, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese police on Monday destroyed a total of 107,000 illegal guns and large amounts of explosives in 154 cities across the country.

The destroyed guns and explosives were confiscated by police or turned over to the police by their holders voluntarily since last year.

In February 2018, the Ministry of Public Security (MPS) launched a two-year campaign to crack down on crimes related to guns and explosives, under which police have solved 16,000 such cases and apprehended 17,000 suspects involved this year, according to the ministry.

The number of gun and explosive-related crimes between January and July this year dropped by 20 percent from a year ago, the MPS said.

The Monday activity was the second of its kind launched by the MPS after police destroyed illegal guns and explosives in 146 cities last September.
