PARIS, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Two forest fire in the south of France are under control after ravaging through 1,000 hectares of vegetation, local authorities announced on Thursday afternoon.

Near Carcassone in the Prefecture of Aude, a fire broke out on Wednesday around 16:00 for a reason still unknown. It spread rapidly during the night because of a strong wind. Up to 550 firefighters, together with water bombers, managed to have the fire circumscribed by Thursday afternoon.

The fire caused no casualties but some 900 hectares of pine forests and vegetation have been destroyed, tweeted the prefecture of Aude.

Another fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon near Beziers, in the neighbouring department of Herault, destroyed 250 hectares of pine forest. The fire stopped progressing by Thursday noon but hundreds of firefighters stand vigilant on site.
