WARSAW, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Poland held a large military parade in Katowice on Thursday to mark the annual Armed Forces Day.

The celebration, which is normally held in the capital Warsaw, saw an impressive flypast of fighter jets and helicopters, as well as a display of military hardware and vehicles.

Traffic was cleared for a huge convoy of tanks on the orbital road, whilst over 2,000 armed forces personnel took part in a march.

In a speech, Polish President Andrzej Duda thanked soldiers and military families, whilst he remembered sacrifices made by the Polish Armed Forces. Duda also paid homage to those who lost their lives in the line of duty.

"We show the unity of Poland through this parade," Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said from the reviewing platform.

"It's nice that such an event takes place in Katowice, I didn't have to go to Warsaw," resident Piotr Nowak told local newspaper. Nowak had joined hundreds of others to wave to the parade.
