DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania recorded a 2.2 percent decrease in crime between January and June, compared to the same period of last year, a senior government official said on Tuesday.

Hamad Masauni, the east African nation's Deputy Minister for Home Affairs, said reported criminal offences in police station between January and June this year were 28,252, compared to 28,889 offences reported between January and June last year.

"Community policing was behind the decrease in crime," Masauni told members of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security in the capital Dodoma.

Equally, said the official, traffic offences also decreased from January to June this year.

"The decrease in traffic offence resulted in the decrease in road accidents," said Masauni, explaining that 781 people were killed in road accidents between January and June, this year, compared to 1,051 people killed in road accidents between January and June last year.

Simon Sirro, the Inspector General of Police, attributed the decrease in criminal offence to the use of technology in fighting crime.

"Police are using advanced technology, including drones, in fighting crime," said Sirro.
