Lithuanian president visits Estonia to enhance regional cooperation

TALLINN, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Tuesday paid his first working visit to Estonia to enhance bilateral ties and regional cooperation.

Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid met with her Lithuanian counterpart at the Presidential Office to discuss defense cooperation and friendly relations between the Baltic countries, said a press release.

At a joint press conference, the two presidents also touched on the regional projects of the synchronization of the Baltic states' power networks with those of continental Europe, among others.

Later, Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas and Parliament President Henn Polluaas also met with Nauseda to discuss bilateral economic cooperation, including regional energy and infrastructure projects, defense cooperation, the future of the European Union, issues of regional security and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allied forces in the region, as well as Baltic and Nordic parliamentary cooperation.

Nauseda described Estonia as an important partner and stressed on the role of defense cooperation to ensure regional security.

Nauseda took office as Lithuanian president on July 12 after winning a decisive victory in the country's presidential election in May.

Tuesday is also the 28th anniversary of Estonia's independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. The Baltic country joined the European Union and the NATO in 2004.
