LONDON, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Police in London on Thursday closed off a section of road near Buckingham Palace after a pedestrian was involved in a collision with a Rolls Royce car.

The Metropolitan Police said the victim, a man aged 66, was declared dead at the scene of the accident at around 3:14 a.m. local time.

The Evening Standard in London said police sealed off a large swathe of the roundabout outside the palace as they investigated the crash, causing rush-hour tailbacks around Piccadilly and Park Lane.

The Qatar-registered Wraith, which has price tags around 250,000 pounds, was left with a large crack on the windscreen, according to the Evening Standard.

The report added that the Wraith has previously been pictured online by motoring enthusiasts driving around exclusive London neighbourhoods including Belgravia. There is no suggestion the car was speeding at the time of the crash this morning, the newspaper added.

Police said the driver of the car, a purple Rolls Royce, stopped after the collision. There have been no arrests.

Detectives from the Met's Serious Collison Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for witnesses following the collision at Hyde Park Corner.
