TOKYO, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese government said that ballistic missiles appear to have been fired from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) into the Sea of Japan on Saturday morning.

The Japanese government said that the missiles are not likely to have entered Japan's territory.

According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the DPRK fired unidentified projectiles twice, which were launched from the town of Sondok in the DPRK's eastern province of South Hamgyong early in the morning.

"Our military is monitoring the situation in case of additional launches and maintaining a readiness posture," the JCS said.

Tokyo and Seoul are gathering information about the missiles, which are unlikely to have landed in Japan's territory or exclusive economic zone, according to Japanese media.
