Kenya to send bowling team to World Championships in Australia

NAIROBI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will enter a team in this year's World Singles Champion of Champions bowling competition, which will be hosted in Adelaide, Australia in October.

Kenya Bowling Association chairman Francis Muriithi said here Monday that Nairobi will be represented by Benson Kariuki in the men's category and Eunice Mbugua in the women's category in Australia.

"They have proved their mantle in the Africa States Tournament lawn bowling and earned their place," said Muriithi.

At the just concluded Africa States Tournament lawn bowling in Nairobi last week, host Kenya finished second behind South Africa. Kariuki clinched a gold medal. Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana took part in the tournament.

The next Africa States tournament lawn bowling will be held in Namibia in 2021.

"However, Kenya still lacks behind with facilities for bowling unlike South Africa and we want the government to come and help us," said Muriithi.

The World Singles Champion of Champions will have some of the best bowlers from the entire five continent.

"The players at this level have proven their skills in bowling and have won accolades in their respective disciplines. It is good to compete at the top," added Muriithi.

Kariuki, bowls at Karen Country club and has represented Kenya in the Atlantic championships 2019 while Mbugua made the country's team to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she played in the women's pair and was placed in fifth place in the pool games.
