NAIROBI, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Kenya will have three sets of golfers to compete at this year's International Pairs World Finals, which will be held in Portugal from Nov. 19-23.

Anthony Murage, chairman of Kenya Golf Union (KGU) said the tournament is critical in helping the country expose its golfers and grow the sport.

The three pairs: Bhamra Bilu and Sandhu. R, Stephen Kiaro and Michael Karanga, James Kamenchu and Edwin Murungi, emerged winners from a nationwide qualifier tournament to earn the ticket to Portugal.

"This is actually one of the biggest amateur events that the Union has organized and we plan to start the qualifiers early next year," Murage said on Monday in Nairobi.

"We thank our sponsors for their dedication and generous support."

World Golf Tournaments (WGT) said this year's International Pairs World Finals will be the third in a row that will take place in Portugal.

The event is created to support and offer competition to amateur golfers and is designed to deliver a thrilling final for participants worldwide.

Other African countries going to Portugal include Namibia, South Africa, Nigeria and Morocco. This is the first time that Kenya will be participating in the World International Pairs Tournament.

"The International Pairs are specifically aimed and designed to give the amateur, handicap clubs and public handicap-registered golfers, the possible opportunity to play at a higher level against golfers of other countries in exciting tournament conditions," said a statement from WGT.

The Penina Golf Resort in Portugal is ranked 15th in the Top 100 Golf Resorts in Continental Europe by Golf World Magazine.

It was designed by U.S. golf course architects, Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore, and has been consistently voted one of the best in Europe for over 25 years.
