YANGON, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's Yangon municipal authorities have been implementing a project to remove stray dogs from the downtown areas, according to the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) Friday.

Serious concern arose from the public as many stray dogs were roaming around in the areas.

Of the four downtown townships covered by the program, two have almost been free from the stray dogs with measures being taken, said U Min Aung, head of the Veterinary and Slaughter House Department of the YCDC.

The stray dogs are being sent to dog shelters in remote Hlaingthaya and Thanlyin townships.

The authorities are dealing with Yangon's increasing stray dogs with six options -- sheltering, killing, vaccinating, spaying, neutering and non-governmental rescue actions and programs, another official of the YCDC Daw Nan Su Shwe Sin said.

Yangon region has more than 10,000 registered pet dogs, while the stray dog population is estimated at about 150,000, according to the YCDC.
