ISLAMABAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A dumper truck overturned and crushed a rickshaw in Pakistan's eastern city of Narowal on Friday, killing eight people including seven school-going children, a police official said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police in Narowal Shahid Mahmood Butt told Xinhua that at least eight children were also injured in the tragic accident that occurred on Zafarwal Shakargarh road in Narowal, a city located some 80 kilometers from Lahore, the provincial capital of eastern Punjab province.

He said the accident happened when the driver of the dumper truck loaded with rocks tried to overtake a vehicle at high speed and overturned on the rickshaw carrying school children, killing seven kids and a rickshaw driver on the spot.

The ill-fated rickshaw was carrying 15 children to various schools in the city in the morning, the police officer said, adding that the victims were between the ages of seven and 14.

All the injured students were shifted to a hospital in the city, where at least five were said to be in critical condition.
