LUSAKA, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Friday sent a message of condolences to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa following the death of that country's first president Robert Mugabe.

Lungu said he received the death of Mugabe with a deep sense of sorrow and expressed sadness at the passing of a pan-Africanist.

According to Lungu, Mugabe will be remembered for his fight for Africa's liberation and standing up to fearlessly defend the continent he loved the most.

"His place in the annals of Africa's political history is well assured," he said in a statement.

The Zambian leader said the hallmark of Mugabe's leadership was his embrace and strong passion for education as the definitive and emphatic means to unlocking the freedom of his people.

Mugabe, 95, died in a Singapore hospital where he has been receiving treatment. He was ousted in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power.
