Myanmar seizes over 180 tons of illegal timbers in a week

YANGON, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities have seized over 181.7 tons of illegal timbers nationwide in a week earlier this month, according to figures released by the Forest Department on Wednesday.

On Sept. 2-8 this year, varieties of illegal timbers including teak and hardwood were confiscated along with eight vehicles, six logging engines and other equipment.

During the period, 23 people were charged in connection with the cases which registered in Kachin, Kayah, Chin, Shan states, Sagaing, Tanintharyi, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Yangon, Ayeyarwady regions and Nay Pyi Taw Union Territory, respectively.

Meanwhile, over 36,986 tons of illegal timbers were confiscated along with 1,841 vehicles and machines across the country as of July this year, said the department's figures.

A total of 2,868 people were charged in connection with the cases in seven months.
