KAMPALA, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- At least five people were killed and 11 others critically injured in a road accident on Wednesday in the central district of Luwero, a traffic police spokesperson said.

Charles Ssebambulidde, Uganda's directorate of traffic and road safety spokesperson, told Xinhua by telephone that the fatal accident occurred at about 1 a.m. after a bus driver knocked a slow moving truck at Wobulenzi, along the Kampala-Gulu Highway.

The bus, belonging to Roblyn Company, was traveling from the capital Kampala to the northern district of Kitgum.

"The bus driver must have been speeding and didn't see the truck that was ahead of him. He rammed into it from behind," said Ssebambulidde.

The police spokesperson said the injured were rushed to various hospitals for treatment while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Luwero mortuary.

Police attribute the high rates of road accidents to reckless driving, over-speeding, human error, drink driving and overloading.

Uganda registers about 20,000 accidents each year, with some 2,000 deaths, making it one of the countries with the highest traffic death rates, according to police statistics.
