BUCHAREST, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- Two Tunisian citizens were caught trying to exit Romania through the western Curtici border crossing point hiding on a freight train that transported vehicles to Belgium, local border police said in a release on Monday.
"Following a check conducted on a freight train running on the Romania-Belgium route, they discovered two males hiding on the platform of a wagon loaded with local Dacia Duster cars. The two men were detained and brought to the headquarters of the border police for investigations," specified the border police in Arad County, in the western part of which is the crossing point.
After preliminary investigation, it was confirmed that the two are Tunisian citizens, aged 29 and 31, who admitted to trying to illegally cross the border with Hungary into the Schengen area in order to get to Western Europe.
Meanwhile, three migrants from Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea were stopped at Romania's northern border after illegally crossing the Ukrainian border, according to local border police there. Foreign citizens often violate Romania's border not because they want to stay in Romania but because they plan to enter the Schengen area.
In recent years, the country has become a springboard for refugees from the Middle East and Africa seeking to enter the Schengen zone via Hungary, the only Schengen country bordering Romania.
