India test fires air-to-air missile

NEW DELHI, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- India test fired air-to-air "Astra" missile on Tuesday, an official statement said.

The missile was launched from Su-30 MKI as a part of User trials off the coast of eastern Odisha state.

According to the statement by the Ministry of Defence, the live aerial target was engaged accurately demonstrating the capability of the first indigenous air-to-air missile.

"The mission profile was executed in a textbook manner. Various Radars, Electro-Optical Tracking System (EOTS) and sensors tracked the missile and confirmed its engagement with the target," it said.

Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Air Force (IAF) teams for the successful test.

Astra is indigenous beyond visual range air-to-air missile with a range of over 70 km.
