BANGKOK, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday donated 100,000 baht (3,273 U.S. dollars) to help flood victims in a fund-raising activity in northeastern Thailand.
Prayut made the personal donation before attending a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. He said the money would go to the disaster relief fund of the office of the permanent secretary for the Prime Minister's Office.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported flooding in the four northeastern provinces of Roi Et, Si Sa Ket, Ubon Ratchathani and Yasothon with about 22,400 people still living in shelters.
Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said flooding damaged about 3 million rai (1.18 million acres) of farmland, and people in Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon provinces in the northeast had also suffered from floods.
Prayut said his government has been working rapidly in urgent assistance measures, such as evacuation of flood victims, setting up of temporary shelters, and provision of food, water and medical services.
"After the situation improves, authorities will assess the damage and start restoration works so that everything can return to normal. They will also provide the best physical and mental health care to flood victims," said Prayut.
