KIEV, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- A United Nations official has said the number of civilian casualties in eastern Ukraine is the lowest since the conflict began in 2014, Interfax Ukraine reported on Tuesday.

"Today, the number of civilian casualties is the lowest for the entire period of the conflict, which has already taken more than 3,300 lives," said Matilda Bogner, head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission to Ukraine.

"We hope that the downward trend will continue in the future," she said at a press conference in Kiev while presenting a report on the human rights situation in Ukraine which covers the period from May 16 to Aug. 15, 2019.

According to the UN representative, eight people - four men and four women - died in the conflict and 60 others were injured over the three months covered by the report.

At the same time, Bogner noted that the number of civilian casualties has decreased significantly since a new ceasefire came into effect on July 21.
