HOUSTON, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Imelda made landfall along southeastern coastal Texas, the United States, Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.
The tropical storm made landfall near Freeport, about 100 km south of downtown Houston. There are no reports of damage or casualties.
The storm formed at about midday, roughly 15 miles (24 km) south of Freeport in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to the special advisory issued by NHC, the main threat from the storm will be extremely heavy rain, and "is likely to produce life-threatening flash flooding along portions of the Upper Texas Coast, including the Houston and Galveston areas."
The system is forecast to turn north-northwestward on Wednesday and that general motion is forecast to continue until dissipation occurs.
