LONDON, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The consumer prices index (CPI) in Britain fell to 1.7 percent year-on-year in August, lower than the 2.1 percent seen in July, the British Office for National Statistics (ONS) said Wednesday.

Data from the ONS showed that the largest downward contribution to the change in the consumer prices index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH) came from recreation and culture.

Meanwhile, according to the ONS, average house prices across Britain rose by 0.7 percent in the year to July 2019 year-on-year.

The average UK house price was 233,000 pounds (about 290,500 U.S. dollars) in July, 2,000 pounds higher than the same period a year earlier.

Mike Hardie, head of inflation at ONS, said: "The inflation rate has fallen noticeably into August, to its lowest rate since late 2016. This was driven mainly by a decrease in computer game prices, plus clothing prices rising by less than last year after the end of the summer sales."

"Annual growth in house prices slowed to its lowest rate since September 2012, with four of the nine English regions now seeing prices falling over the year," Hardie said. (1 pound = 1.25 U.S. dollars)
