NEW DELHI, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme Court of India, the country's apex court, on Wednesday asked all the parties involved in the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi Ayodhya land dispute case to try to complete their arguments by Oct. 18.

The five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, said that "Simultaneously the mediation process can go on along with the hearing, which is going on in Supreme Court and if an amicable settlement is reached by it, the same can be filed before the SC."

The bench also said that the day-to-day proceedings in the land dispute case have reached an 'advanced stage' and will continue.

The demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 triggered countrywide communal riots between Hindus and Muslims and claimed over 2,000 lives, mostly of Muslims.

Many Hindus believe that the mosque was built over the birthplace of Hindu god -- Lord Ram.

The Supreme Court has been hearing the petition on the dispute to decide to whom the site belongs.
