WARSAW, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- Polish actor Jerzy Stuhr is suing the Polish Treasury, arguing that his right to use clean air has been violated and asking for compensation from the state in a trial whose first hearing took place here on Tuesday.

During the hearing, Stuhr argued that, because of smog in Poland, he was suffering from breathing problems, especially since he had been treated for esophageal cancer.

The actor said that because of the health problems caused by smog, he was sometimes having trouble finishing performances on stage.

Journalist Mariusz Szczygiel and medical consultant Tomasz Sadlik joined the trial, making similar complaints. Stuhr asked for 20,000 Polish zloty (5,100 U.S. dollars) in compensation to be paid to a foundation helping children suffering from cancer.

Stuhr is one of the most popular Polish actors, having received numerous national and international awards.

The Warsaw court is expected to make a decision Oct. 1.
