Five Afghans held at New Delhi airport for drug trafficking

NEW DELHI, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Five Afghans, who had ingested capsules containing a narcotic substance worth 15 crore Indian rupees (2.12 million U.S. dollars), were held at New Delhi airport upon their arrival in the country, an official statement said on Friday.

The passengers arrived at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi from Kandahar via a Kabul flight on Sept. 14.

On the basis of specific intelligence, they were intercepted in a joint operation by officers of the Air Intelligence Unit and Preventive Branch, IGIA Customs and Special Cell, Delhi Police.

According to the statement, between Sept. 14-18, a total of 370 capsules were ejected by the five passengers and were found to contain a white powdery substance. Preliminary testing of narcotics substances has indicated that the white powder is heroin of high purity.

The capsules were seized and all the five persons were placed under arrest in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Further investigations are under progress.
