SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Overseas Chinese in the western United States are holding an art exhibition in the San Francisco Bay Area as a special way of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Zhang Fuming, president of the U.S. Chinese American Association of Commerce (CAAC), which is hosting the exhibition, told Xinhua that the event featured some of the best artistic pieces created by famous overseas Chinese artists in the Bay Area.

"The exhibits put on display here at the CAAC reflect our best wishes for China, as our ancestral country, to continue to thrive and grow stronger and more prosperous in the future," said Zhang Shipei, a painter who is famous for his oil paintings.

The CAAC provides "a wonderful platform" for the artists in the Bay Area to come together and share their appreciation for China and its growth, he said.

The exhibition is of special significance because it is solely dedicated to the celebration of the PRC's founding anniversary, said Chen Wanxiang, another famous painter.

He explained that his painting on display, which depicted two lively birds perching on flowers, was done with profuse colors, because the adoption of extra shades of bright and vivid colors highlights the "beautiful meaning" of a flourishing and prosperous China.

Zhou Ruifang, who was among the first group of visitors to the exhibition when it opened on Saturday, shared her excitement about the visit.

"I'm really thrilled to have an opportunity to see a lot of paintings themed with strong Chinese elements, Chinese culture and calligraphy," she said. "It's a marvelous event that is worth my day off over the weekend."
