RABAT, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- A Brazilian couple arrested in Casablanca airport were found to have swallowed capsules containing over two kilograms of cocaine, the Moroccan police said Tuesday.

A total of 151 capsules of cocaine were extracted from their bodies at the Ibn Rochd University Hospital in Casablanca following the two suspects' arrest at the Mohammed V International Airport, the police said in a statement.

The couple, aged 20 and 27, arrived in Casablanca on Thursday from Sao Paolo.

The wife was found in possession of 210 grams of cocaine under her clothes, and an X-ray check revealed capsules in the couple's stomachs, according to the statement.

Drug traffickers have used new smuggling routes to Europe over the past decade, mainly via Morocco.

Moroccan authorities said the country witnessed in recent years an increase of cocaine seizures, including 541 kg of cocaine in a container from Latin America which arrived in Casablanca in February 2018.
