China, DPR Korea win golds of total on 7th day of weightlifting worlds

PATTAYA, Thailand, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The 2019 Weightlifting World Championships continued with the men's 96kg and women's 76kg categories here on Tuesday, with athletes from China and DPR Korea winning gold medals.

In the men's 96kg category, Aton Pliesnoi of Georgia made all three good lifts in the competition of snatch and won the gold medal on 181kg. China's Tian Tao made a good lift of 180kg at the third attempt after failing at the previous two, winning the silver. Jhonatan Mosquera of Colombia took the bronze of snatch on 179kg.

During the competition of clean and jerk, Tian and Fares Elbakh of Qatar both challenged 230kg at their last attempt, competing against each other for the gold medal. By making a good lift of 230kg, Tian won the gold of clean and jerk. Elbakh, after failing at the last attempt, took the silver of clean and jerk of 224kg. The bronze went to Iran's Seyedayoob Mousavijarahi on 214kg.

Tian finally won the gold of total on 410kg while Elbakh took the silver on 402kg. Pliesnoi won the bronze with 394kg.

In the women's 76kg division, Rim Jong Sim of DPR Korea, a two-time Olympic medalist, made all three good lifts in the competition of snatch. Her successful lifts of 124kg and 126kg both broke her own world record of 123kg in the snatch. Chinese athlete Zhang Wangli won the silver with 118kg and Neisi Barrera of Ecuador took the bronze of snatch on 110kg.

In clean and jerk, Zhang won the gold medal by making a good lift of 153kg at the third attempt. Rim failed at her last attempt trying to surpass Zhang, taking the silver on 152kg. Mexico's Aremi Zavala won the bronze of a clean and jerk of 138kg.

Rim, with a result of 276kg, won the gold medal of total in women's 76kg division. Zhang took the silver on 271kg while the bronze went to Barrera on 245kg.

The 10-day championships, running through September 27, also serves as qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
