Namibia reaffirms commitment to continue engaging with China for development

WINDHOEK, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Embassy in Namibia on Friday evening held a reception to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China in Namibia's capital, Windhoek.

Zhang Yiming, Chinese ambassador to Namibia said that over the past 70 years, led by the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people of all ethnic groups have united to achieve prosperity, and bring about the happiness of the people.

The past 70 years have also witnessed an uplift of China's international status and influence. It increasingly contributed to the peace and development to benefit the global community and the African countries, including Namibia.

According to Zhang, in Namibia, China has fostered development in the sectors including trade, infrastructure development, public health, education, and cultural exchange.

"Our bilateral relations have been continuously enriched and enhanced, particularly in recent years, as practical bilateral cooperation increases. China-Namibia relations can be an epitome and model of China-Africa relations," Zhang said.

Utoni Nujoma, Minister of Land Reform on behalf of the Namibian government, hailed China for transforming its country as well as in advancing strengthened solidarity and cooperation with African countries.

"China has demonstrated that by harnessing human capital for development, it is possible to transverse from a subsistence agrarian community to an industrialized country," Nujoma said.

In Namibia, according to Nujoma, China-Namibia relations have been expanding with major investments in mining sector, infrastructure development.

"The history of Sino-Namibian relations fully proves that Namibia is one of the most reliable friends of China. Namibia re-affirms our solid commitment to continue engaging with China for the mutual development, progress, and prosperity of our two countries," he said.

Namibia's ruling South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) party also sent congratulations to China.

Sophia Shaningwa, secretary-general of the SWAPO party, lauded China's support during Namibia's liberation and post-independence, which laid a foundation for the development and nurturing of China-Namibia relations.

"As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, we pause to reflect on the enormous achievements of the Communist Party of China and its leadership to date," Shaningwa said.

The event was attended by Namibia's former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, ministers, parliamentarians, diplomatic corps, local leaders, the Chinese community and people from all walks of life.

The guests were also entertained by Chinese cultural performances.
