Global youths discuss challenges in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Youths from all over the world gathered in Johannesburg to discuss challenges facing them and try to find solutions in the World Youths Summit which started on Monday.

The Summit President Hassan Rengou said delegates from different countries will discuss issues affecting the youths including unemployment, violent crimes, forced marriages, new technologies and how youths can access education.

South Africa's Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Department Pinky Kekana said education have to be transformed to be relevant to the changing world.

"We are living in the new era of fourth industrial revolution. Education has to be changed and be responsive and integrate fourth industrial revolution so that children are not just consumers of education but entrepreneurs and add value to our economy,"she said.

The United Nations Population Fund representative for South Africa Beatrice Mutali said youths should be involved in appropriate skills building and education.

She said youths are active in peace building, innovation, climate change activism and sustainable development goals.

Shakira Choonara from African Union Youth Advisory Council said the majority of the African Union members ratified the Youth Charter but are lagging behind in implementing it. She urged the African governments to be held accountable to prioritize the youths matters.

The Summit will end on Wednesday.
