WARSAW, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski won't play in the matches against Latvia and North Macedonia in the UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying due to injury.

The West Ham player sustained a torn thigh muscle on Saturday in the Premier Leauge's encounter against Bournemouth.

"Lukasz is ruled out of the game at least for a few weeks. In the worst scenario, he won't be back this year. There is a threat that a surgery will be needed. We must wait and see how the muscle will react to the damage," local media quoted Jacek Jaroszewski, the Polish national team's physiotherapist, as saying Tuesday.

Fabianski will be replaced by Juventus goalie Wojciech Szczesny who lost to the former Arsenal player a few weeks ago when Polish coach Jerzy Brzeczek announced the squad for the upcoming qualifications.

Poland, who will take Latvia on October 10 and host Macedonia in Warsaw three days later, are still on the top of Group G, but in their last two matches they earned just one point.

Brzeczek's team surprisingly lost to Slovenia 2-0 in Lublana before goaless draw with Austria in Warsaw.
