NAIROBI, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Kenya women's volleyball coach Paul Bitok said on Wednesday he would step down after leading the team to the 11th position out of 12 teams at the just concluded World Cup in Japan.
Bitok, who came in as a caretaker coach two months ago, said on Wednesday that the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) needed to appoint a long term coach to lead the team to compete in the Africa Olympic Games qualifiers in January.
"As you already know, two months ago, I accepted to take over as a caretaker coach on a temporary basis as we work towards stabilizing the team. This is not one off event, it takes time, it is a process," Bitok said.
The Kenyan team backed home from Japan, where it had been for two weeks competing in the World Cup. China won all 11 matches to defend the title.
"Pending discussions with the federation, I would like to extend my collaboration in a number of ways beyond coaching. It is my goal to venture into a more advisory role specifically sports management and consultancy," said Bitok.
Bitok, however, said Kenya has the capacity and potential to win the ticket back to the Olympic Games after 15 years out.
"While the global stage was tough, we did not falter on our position as the continent's giants. A lot lies ahead of us, and it requires enormous preparation. One such major event is the 2020 Olympics," he added.
