HONG KONG, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Unrest-hit Hong Kong saw a 62-percent plunge in the arrivals of the mainland visitors on the National Day on Tuesday compared with last year, according to official statistics.
Hong Kong, a tourist destination especially popular among mainland shoppers, registered 93,097 arrivals of mainland visitors on Tuesday, down from 247,626 on the last year's National Day, according to Hong Kong's immigration department.
Arrivals of other non-local visitors also dropped by about 33.8 percent to 17,964 on Tuesday.
Hong Kong was hit by a fresh bout of violence on the National Day when black-clad rioters damaged properties, attacked police, set fires and paralyzed traffic.
The unrest, which has raged for more than three months, has taken a heavy toll on Hong Kong's tourism and retailing sectors, among the largest employers in the special administrative region.
Hong Kong's visitor arrivals plummeted by nearly 40 percent in the tourist rush season of August.
Some travel agencies told Xinhua that their clients shunned Hong Kong tours for safety reasons, especially after some protesters reportedly harassed mainland tourists and businesses with mainland links.
