LISBON, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The hurricane Lorenzo, which struck the Portuguese archipelago of Azores on Wednesday, has caused 53 people homeless and severe damages to the port facilities, Portuguese Lusa News Agency reported.

The hurricane has caused severe damage in the Lajes das Flores harbor -- the main commercial port in the island of Flores -- and 53 people had to be relocated and another 50 were removed from their homes as a precautionary measure in Azores, said Lusa.

Speaking to reporters early in the afternoon, Teresa Machado Luciano, the Azores Regional Health Secretary, said that the hurricane caused 171 occurrences across the region, adding that tree falls, floods, destroyed roads and coastal overgrowth were the most common occurrences reported.

"The most serious occurrence, very complicated, is the one of the protective jetty at Lajes das Flores, which was totally destroyed," said Luciano.

The Portuguese Prime Minister office has announced to send Minister of Economy Pedro Siza Vieira to the Azores to assess damage from the hurricane and "prepare an effective response". Enditem
