RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Botafogo sacked head coach Eduardo Barroca on Sunday following a poor run of results that have left the Brazilian Serie A club in a fight to avoid relegation.
Assistant coach Bruno Lazaroni, the son of former Brazil national team boss Sebastiao Lazaroni, will assume the role on an interim basis, Botafogo said in a statement.
The announcement came just hours after Botafogo's 1-0 home loss to Rio de Janeiro rivals Fluminense, their fourth straight league defeat.
The two-time Brazilian Serie A champions are now 12th in the Serie A standings with 27 points from 23 matches, just seven points clear of the relegation places.
Barroca, 37, led Botafogo to 12 wins, five draws and 17 defeats.
